Free Windows Productivity Tools: Stop Your Mouse From Fighting You

We have all been there: you are trying to highlight a long section of a contract or a lengthy email to copy it into another document, and your finger slips. The highlight vanishes, and you have to start all over again. Or perhaps you are reading a detailed report and the mouse cursor keeps sitting right on top of the text you are trying to see, blocking your view.
These are what I call “micro-frustrations.” On their own, they only take a few seconds to fix. But when they happen ten times a day, they break your concentration. They turn a simple administrative task into a chore.
The good news is that these friction points are often not your fault—they are just limitations of how your computer is set up. Microsoft has a free utility called PowerToys that acts like a set of “extra” tools for Windows, designed specifically to remove these kinds of annoyances.
Two of the newest additions to this suite focus entirely on making your mouse behave the way you actually want it to.
Using free Windows tools to make your mouse work for you
If you spend your day managing a business—whether you are coordinating a logistics fleet or running a dental clinic—you probably spend a lot of time in documents and spreadsheets. These two tools are designed to make those tasks feel smoother.
Mouse Button Lock: No more “finger slips”
Normally, to select a large block of text, you have to click and hold the left mouse button down firmly while dragging the cursor across the screen. If you are selecting several pages of text, this can be physically tiring, and if you let go too early, you lose your progress.
The Mouse Button Lock tool changes this. Instead of holding the button down for the entire journey, you simply hold it for a moment and then release it. The computer “locks” the selection mode. You can then move your mouse freely to the end of the text you want to highlight without holding any buttons. When you reach the end, you click once more to stop the selection.
It turns a stressful “drag-and-hope” maneuver into a relaxed two-click process.
CursorHide: Clearing your field of vision
There is a specific kind of annoyance that happens when you are reviewing a document or a website and the mouse cursor—that little white arrow—gets stuck right in the middle of a sentence. You move it, but it still feels like it is in the way of the information you are trying to process.
CursorHide solves this by making the cursor disappear automatically when you aren’t actively using it to click something. As soon as you start typing or move the mouse again, the cursor reappears. It is a small change, but it removes a constant visual distraction, allowing you to focus on the content of your work rather than the tool you are using to read it.
How to get these tools on your computer
You do not need to be a technical expert to set this up. Because this is a Microsoft utility, it is integrated directly into the Windows ecosystem.
The simplest way to get it is through the Microsoft Store (the app store already installed on your computer). Just search for “PowerToys,” click the download button, and it will install itself. If you already have it installed, you can simply open the app from your Start menu and check for updates to ensure you have the latest version with these mouse features.
Once the app is open, look for the “Input & Output” category on the left-hand side and click on “Mouse Utilities.” From there, you will see switches for both Mouse Button Lock and CursorHide. Flip them to “On,” and you are ready to go.
Common questions about Windows productivity
Is this software safe to install on a business computer? Yes. PowerToys is developed by Microsoft. It is a free utility designed to enhance the standard Windows experience without compromising the security of your system.
Will these settings slow down my computer? No. These tools are lightweight. They are designed to run in the background and only activate when you trigger them, so you won’t notice any impact on your computer’s speed.
Do I have to use all the tools in the suite? Not at all. PowerToys comes with dozens of different utilities. You can ignore everything else and only turn on the two mouse tricks mentioned here.
Focus on your business, not your tools
Finding a “productivity hack” like Mouse Button Lock is a great feeling because it solves a tangible problem. However, for a business owner, the goal isn’t to become an expert in Windows utilities—it is to have a computer that simply works.
The reality is that most business owners spend far too much of their own time hunting for tools, troubleshooting weird glitches, or wondering why a system update has slowed everything down. Your time is far more valuable when spent on your customers and your growth than on managing your operating system.
This is where professional maintenance and support make a difference. Instead of you spending your evening searching for ways to make your mouse work better, a professional team can handle the system monitoring, security updates, and performance tuning in the background.
At IT Move NL, we take the technical weight off your shoulders. We ensure your systems are updated and optimized so that the tools you use every day stay out of your way, leaving you free to focus on running your business. If your technology has started to feel like a hurdle rather than a help, we are here to fix that.
